Rough Park Nature Reserve

Walk the Rough Park Way through over 100 acres of horse grazed paddocks, woodland plantations and the vast expanse of Castle Green meadow, one of the boroughs best wildflower meadows.

Formerly an open cast mining site Rough Park is now a wonderful vast expanse of grassland and woodland in south Telford freely accessible for all to enjoy. The Rough Park Way footpath runs through the site, passing by horse grazed paddocks, woodland plantations and the large open meadow of Castle Green that during the summer is awash with common spotted and southern marsh orchids and home to both dingy skipper and small heath butterflies. The site forms part of a national ‘B-line’, large national corridors that run across the country that have been identified as important for pollinator species like bees, hoverflies and butterflies. The footpaths link the northern and eastern areas of Lightmoor, Dawley Hamlets and Madeley into Coalbrookdale and the Ironbridge Gorge. To the east of the site is the Rough Park BMX track for those looking for a more adrenaline filled day.

The site is cared for by Telford & Wrekin Council and the small but dedicated Friends of Rough Park who are part of the Telford Green Space Partnership.
