Who What Why
Lodge Field is an inspiring place for local photographers, poets and creative people with views across the Ironbridge Gorge and nearby woodlands.
Coupled with The Beeches Field and Madeley Pit Mounds, the area forms a ‘green corridor’ along the north edge of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.
Taken on by local enthusiasts, the Lodge Field group, who have worked very hard with Telford & Wrekin Council to turn into a much valued area.
The area is steeped in local history and many of the stories told involving the field directly have been documented by local historians. The Lodge, a 16th/17th century building, from which the site derives its name, still overlooks Lodge Field.
There is free access to the field which contains areas of meadow with a significant number of rare plant varieties, areas of scrub, small springs and a boggy area that between them provide a variety of habitats for birds, butterflies and small mammals.
A walk on this site can be easily linked to the Beeches Local Nature Reserve (LNR) which lies to the south and also to visiting the wider Ironbridge Woodlands which are well signposted.
Each year the local community organises a communal picnic on Lodge Field. June 2015 was the 10th anniversary picnic with many young families sharing food, music and games as well as informative tours to point out wildlife.
Green hay is collected from the field and transported to nearby Lightmoor to create a meadow adjacent to the Ironbridge by-pass which is within a nature reserve managed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.
The green arts and crafts day – again an annual local event – is held to celebrate the many ways in which Lodge Field can inspire works of art, be they photographs, woven pieces, paintings, sculpture and haiku poetry.
There is no parking at the reserve, only minimum parking on the surrunding roads. The site is accessed by foot and the closest car parks can be found in Ironbridge:
- Wharfage car park – TF8 7NH
- Station Yard car park – TF8 7JP.
