More than 103,000 wheelie bins for recycling cans, glass and plastic have been delivered to homes across the Shropshire Council area in less than a year.

Latest update from Shropshire Council Newsroom:

The purple-lidded bins are available on request, with orders opening in January 2022 and deliveries beginning in May 2022.

As of 17 March 2023, 103,179 bins had been delivered.

The bins have been manufactured by Telford-based Craemer Ltd.

Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said:

“We’ve had a phenomenal number of requests from across the county for these new bins and I know many people couldn’t wait to receive theirs. I’m delighted that such a large number of bins have been requested, and delivered.  I’m confident that we’ll soon see an increase in the amount of waste recycled in the county as people use these new, larger containers.

“I want to thank everyone who ordered a bin, and thank people for their patience while waiting for theirs to be delivered.

“I also want to thank Craemer for manufacturing such a large number of bins in a short timescale, as well as all involved in processing the orders and delivering the bins.”

Having won the contract to manufacture the bins Craemer pledged to donate £6000 to local good causes through its social value fund.

Money from the fund has been given to Llanymynech Village Hall, Lovelyland, Clun Climate and Environment Group, Bylet Bowling Club, Street Allotment Project, Festival Drayton Centre, Shropshire Cycle Hub, Clee St Margaret Village Hall and OsNosh CIC.

People who requested a new bin can continue to use their recycling boxes as well as their bin, re-use their boxes – perhaps as planters or for storage – or take them to a recycling centre to be recycled.

The new bins will reduce the amount of waste lost to the recycling process after being blown out of the boxes on windy days,

And they make the storage of recycling more convenient for residents, and reduce the amount of bending and lifting for residents and waste and recycling crews.
