Wellington takes another step towards a sustainable town centre with it’s first zero waste high street store.
Telford’s first zero waste shop The Little Green Pantry started in 2019 with a Crowdfunder project set up by owner Keli King. Initially running from pop up stands at fetes and festivals, doing doorstep deliveries and regular market stalls. Keli has supported her customers throughout lockdown by providing safe, affordable refill food and household products.
Through a successful grant application, The Little Green Pantry has been able to set up it’s first high street fronted shop at 2 Crown Street Wellington.
Opening secures council support
The Grand Opening on 9th July saw a number of local councillors attending to show their support including the Mayor of Wellington Paul Davis, Councillor Angela McClements and Councillor Graham Cook.
Councillor Davis said:
“It’s awesome to see yet another business open in Wellington and better still that reduce, reuse and refill is at its heart.
“Just what we need Keli, thank you and the best of luck to you!”
Councillor McClements added online:
“Great to be at opening of The Little Green Pantry in Wellington.
“What a gem of a shop, offering so many free options and refills.
“All made possible through support from Telford and Wrekin Councils ‘Pride in the High Street Fund’.”
The Little Green Pantry has a wide range of dried food items that can be dispensed directly into your own containers to waste on single use packaging. Foods include a variety of pastas, rices, lentils, flours, oats, cereals, oils, vinegars, teas, coffees and dried fruits.
Alongside these there is a wide range of eco-friendly cleaning products, some tasty vegan chocolates and treats and a range of household items such as reusable cleaning cloths, bamboo crockery sets, reusable cups and more.
Eco businesses working together
Two concession stands are also located in the shop, a great example of how how local eco businesses can work together to help reduce waste.
Bundle of Love is run by Helen of Telford Slings, she sells an amazing selection of slings, carriers, reusable cloth nappies and baby & toddler accessories. Mainly from British brands and using natural fibres, along with unique items created by work-at-home-parents such as clothing, necklaces, keyrings, reusable wipes and so much more! Stock will be changing regularly and if there is anything in particular you would like to see, get in touch with Helen and ask.
Mossy Parties offers reusable party kit hire in a bid to eliminate single use plastics and waste from children’s parties. Kits include tableware, decorations and even use of a pre-loved foil balloon library. Everything is reusable, affordable, colourful and even includes the washing up! Making it easy for Shropshire parents to have a stress free planet friendly party. Plastic free party bags are available to order directly from the shop, or make your own with a pick and mix selection of party favours.
If you haven’t used a refill store before, please give it a go! Just bring along your own containers – these can be anything you have from jars and tubs to old takeaway containers and used shampoo bottles.
Your container gets weighed, you then fill it up, and it will be reweighed before you pay. Keli is there to help and you will be amazed about how affordable and delicious the products are.
