A campaign has been launched to encourage people to enjoy a ‘greener Coronation’ for King Charles in May.

Latest update from Gloucestershire Council Newsroom:

The nation will come together on Saturday 6 May to celebrate the crowning of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey, with street parties and other celebrations.

The Gloucestershire Resources and Waste Partnership, which includes the county council and the six district councils, have launched a campaign to encourage people to consider the environmental impact of their celebration event, by making it a sustainable and greener Coronation.

The campaign will focus on tips and ideas for residents, including:

  • Using sustainable decorations: Instead of using single-use decorations, choose reusable or biodegradable ones. For example, you could decorate the party with potted plants or flowers that can be planted afterwards.
  • Choosing sustainable transport: Encourage guests to take public transport, walk, cycle or car share to the party.
  • Serving sustainable food and drinks: Source local and seasonal ingredients for the Coronation menu.
  • Reducing waste: Provide recycling and food bins throughout the event and encourage guests to bring their own reusable water bottles and utensils.

There is also a free Greener Coronation celebration pack residents can download here, which includes an invitation template, greener Coronation planning checklist and “royal recycling station” signs, to help ensure that waste is correctly recycled at the event.

King Charles III has been a longstanding advocate for environmental issues, particularly action on climate change. By choosing to have a greener Coronation celebration, residents can make a positive impact on the environment and celebrate the King’s ethical values.

Cllr David Gray, cabinet member for environment and planning, said: “The Coronation of King Charles III in May will be a fantastic event for people in Gloucestershire to celebrate, but it’s important to remember the impact on the environment.

“By following these tips everyone can enjoy this historic event in a sustainable way, helping us to create a Greener Gloucestershire.”

You can get involved by planting a tree to mark the occasion, and use #GreenerCoronation on social media to share your Greener Coronation ideas and help inspire others.
