Gloucestershire Recycles wants people to recycle their broken electricals as they launch their latest campaign, ‘Recycle Your Electricals’.

The campaign aims to encourage more people to recycle their items rather than throwing them away.
Electricals are rich in precious metals, but these resources are lost when electricals aren’t properly recycled.
Discarded or unused household electricals cost the UK economy £370 million per year of lost valuable raw materials such as gold, copper, aluminium and steel. The average family could make around £620 by selling their unused electricals.
The creation of new electrical items also has a high carbon footprint, so repairing, reusing, and recycling electricals is especially important to help reduce the impact of climate change.
Both large and small electrical items can be taken to Gloucestershire’s Household recycling centres. A small electrical item is any household item with a plug that can fit in a carrier bag. These can often be recycled at the kerbside.
The campaign will not only encourage residents to recycle their electricals, but also to repair or donate any unused items.
It will also remind residents of the importance of removing any batteries before recycling, as damaged or crushed batteries can cause fires and explosions in waste collection vehicles and waste sites.
Cllr David Gray, Cabinet member responsible for the environment at Gloucestershire County Council, said:
“Making sure we reuse or recycle our electricals is an important step to tackling our waste, and can help you earn money.
“Electrical items can be easily recycled across the county, and in some cases from the kerbside.
“Reusing or recycling these items is an important step towards us working to create a Greener Gloucestershire.”
